Montana Rural Teacher of the Year: Mrs. Seth Coombe - Cardwell School

Mrs. Seth Coombe has been named the Montana Rural Teacher of the Year in remarkable recognition of dedication, leadership, and passion for education. Mrs. Coombe, who has been a teacher for nineteen years- with eleven in Cardwell, wears many hats at the Cardwell School and has become a driving force behind its success. This award is a testament to her tireless efforts.

Mrs. Coombe not only serves as the supervising teacher but also teaches Early Literacy and Kindergarten in a combined classroom. In addition to her teaching duties, she acts as the administrator, overseeing every aspect of the school's operations, from curriculum planning to community outreach. Her role at the Cardwell School has been essential.

Mrs. Coombe's selection for Montana Rurual Teacher of the year was made possible through the nominations submitted by Jefferson County Superintendent of Schools, Sarah Eyer. The nomination process was bolstered by numerous glowing letters of recommendation from staff members, school board representatives, community members, and even former students - all praised Mrs. Coombe's unwavering dedication to her students and her innovative approach to education.

"Recently, Family Minded Magazine, using data from Niche, ranked Cardwell as the Best Public Elementary School in the state. State test scores show 65 percent of students are proficient in math and 85 percent are proficient in reading, said Eyer in her nomination letter. "Because Cardwell serves students through eighth grade, it's ranked as the top middle schoolin Montana, and its teachers in all grades are ranked No. 1 in the state."

Mrs. Coombe's commitment to fostering a supportive and enriching learning environment, despite the challenges that come with teaching in a rural setting, has clearly paid off.

"I have so many amazing memories with my students. To pick just one seems impossible. However, I will say three very special former students wrote letters of recommendation for me, each making me cry. Teaching is a job that is about forging relationships with people, and I am so blessed to know that my efforts have impacted my students in a positive and lasting way," Coombe said.

In a time when rural schools face increasing challenges from limited resources to declining enrollments, Mrs. Coomb's ability to maintain excellence and foster a sense of community pride has set Cardwell Elementary apart.

As she accepts her Montana Rural Teacher of the Year title, Mrs. Coombe's legacy at Cardwell Elementary grows, inspiring rural educators nationwide.

"This award is so humbling. I see it as a testament not to just my work but to the incredible students, staff, and community I work with daily. I believe we are teaching academics daily but also helping to mold young people into outstanding, well-rounded individuals who have respect for themselves and a strong understanding of the value of others. Our Rural schools are special places," Coombe said.

"As I reflect on this honor, I am reminded of a gift I received from a student. It still hangs in my classroom today. It is a frame with A Teacher's Prayer in it. This prayer has shaped my teaching philosophy," Coombe said. "I, as an educator, need Serenity, Courage, and Wisdom each and every day. It reminds me to work hard to see each student for who they are and to help them grow into the best versions of themselves."

Her story is a powerful reminder that even the smallest schools can achieve big dreams with passion, dedication, and community support.

"I love the profession I am a part of. I have been able to work with amazing people throughout my career. My advice to future teachers is take the time to build strong relationships, see each student for their unique gifts and remember teaching isn't just academics, it is also helping them to become all they were created to be. Lastly, enjoy every moment!"
