Ledger Looking Back 25 Years: 3/8/2000

Whitehall area voters may have a chance to create a local recreation district when they vote in the June 2000 primary election. The Jefferson County Commission approved a resolution calling for the ballot measure during its March 1 meeting and will make a decision on whether or not to place the measure on the ballot following the March 22 public hearing on the subject.

A new store in Whitehall -Horsefly- will hold its grand opening on March 17-18. The store is owned by Roberta and Jerry Reher and Bernette Wagner. Assistants include Jeana, James, and Katelynn.

The Forest Service is reviewing a proposal to build a new trail along the Continental Divide and rework the Toll Canyon trail, both near Pipestone Pass, between Butte and Whitehall.

WHS Creative Leader of the Week: Lance Briggs. Director Britta Olverson says, "Lance is an excellent musician and has played various instruments as the band has needed." He is a junior and the son of Dean and Wendy Briggs. He plans to attend Rick's College and enjoys music, reading, horses, and basketball.

WHS Student of the Week: David Quesnell. Shop teacher Tom Wheeler says, "David has helped to improve the shop facility with his problem-solving approach to all fabrication jobs assigned to him." David is the son of Bruce and Gwen Quesnell and has plans to attend a technical school. He enjoys dirt biking, fishing, and going to the races.

WHS Athletes of the Week: The Lady Trojan Volleyball Team. The WHS team took second place at the distinct volleyball tournament and pushed unbeaten Manhattan into a rally game to decide the title. The Lady Trojans gave up some experience and lots of height to Manhattan but overcame that with determination, enthusiasm, and extra effort.
