Ledger Looking Back 25 Years: 2/9/2000

FEBRUARY 9, 2000

The Whitehall Chamber’s mural committee plans to raise enough funds to complete eight new murals in the upcoming year. The Whitehall Lewis and Clark Murals Project, spearheaded by the Chamber, has planned an ambitious year in 2000. Although a significant amount of behind-the-scenes work is already underway, the first public demonstration of activity will come on May 6 with a community silent art auction.

After hearing from students and parents during a Feb. 2 board meeting, the Whitehall School Board voted unanimously to continue allowing high school students “open campus” privileges to leave the school during lunchtime.

WHS Creative Leader of the Week: Jessica Bell: WHS band director Britta Oliverson nominated Jessica and said, “She always has a fantastic attitude during rehearsals. She always has a fantastic attitude during rehearsals. She helps younger students and provides excellent leadership in her clarinet section.” Jessica is the daughter of Bruce and Patty Bell and a senior.

WHS Student of the Week: Jill Hanson: The chemistry department says Jill has mastered the concepts and has a good attitude. “Even at the end of the day.” Jill, a junior, is the daughter of Dean and Roselle Hanson. She has college plans and enjoys rodeo, singing, drama, photography, and training horses.

WHS Athletes of the Week: Scott Merkel and Rick Kelley: These sophomores earned the right to compete at the Montana state wrestling tournament in Billings Feb. 11-12. Merkel finished fourth (140 pounds) at divisional, and Kelley placed third (160 pounds). Both “wrestled tough” at divisional and worked hard for the right to compete for a state title.
