Golden Sunlight Mine layoff results in 65 lost jobs. Over half of the laid-off employees are from the Whitehall area. Workers received notices starting Thursday, Jan 27, and by close of business on Jan 31, Golden Sunlight had gone from 163 full-time employees to 98 full-time employees. Employees who had lost their jobs received a severance package, which included eight weeks of salary plus two weeks of pay for every completed year worked at GSM.
The Montana Department of Transportation plans to replace the timber bridge across the Jefferson River Overflow approximately three miles west of Cardwell in Jefferson County. The project includes the construction of a wider bridge and horizontal alignment upstream of the current bridge, which will straighten the existing roadway. Traffic will be maintained during the construction of the present bridge
WHS Creative Leader of the Week: Kevin Sacry. Student Council Leader Lee Ann Gallagher nominated the senior; he has worked hard on a Christmas program slideshow presentation, a raffle, and skit/assembly programs. He is the son of Nancy and Jim Sacry and plans to attend Montana Tech.
WHS Student of the Week: Homer McKinney. Nominated for being a good student and having a good understanding of the computer software used in computer applications class. Homer, a senior, was nominated by teacher Julie Kieckbusch. He is Lorinda Mckinney's son and plans to attend college. He enjoys writing, reading, playing on the Playstation, and being with friends.
WHS Athlete of the Week: Jenica Dorvall. The junior led the volleyball team with 24 kills, 36 digs, two blocks, and seven aces over the weekend. Coach Theresa Adams says Jenica has been hitting the ball exceptionally well! Jenica is the daughter of Wanda Freman and Steve Dorvall and has plans to attend college after high school. She enjoys volleyball and other sports.
