Just Ask Georgia: 12/11/2024

Georgia, I have a question,

My annual Christmas party is coming up, and I want to uninvite my sister and her fiance. Let me explain.

Last year, when asked if she was going, she said with disgust, “I’m not going to that,” but then showed up late, announced her engagement, and left. I would’ve been happy for her, but she didn’t say hello to me, didn’t say goodbye, didn’t even show me the ring. I just heard cheering from the other room, and then, after they left, it was all anyone could talk about.

This year, I invited all my siblings again, and in the group text where I was attempting to get a head count, she shared the video of her proposal, and now everyone is only talking about that again. I blocked the text conversation out of anger, but I’d like to ask her not to come. I tried talking to my mom about it and why I was upset, but she thinks I’m being selfish. What do you think?

Tired of the Shadow

Dear Shadow,

It sounds to me as though your sister has Main Character energy and can’t stand to share the limelight with anyone - even if it's the host of a holiday party AND her sister.

There’s no way to win this situation without making yourself look bad. Unless you plan to announce your fake pregnancy or engagement as well, realize that those who know your family realize the spotlight must ALWAYS be on her - as unfair as that is to you.

With love, GEORGIA
