The Whitehall Community Library has received multiple inquiries about what the library is doing for Christmas. For almost 20 years, Santa has come to play with the children here for other activities. Again, this year, we will be having Christmas at the library. Santa will be here for his 18th appearance, and the Winter Wear Giveaway will hand out coats, hats, gloves, and other winter wear. There will be children’s programming, gifts for all of our stressed-out patrons, and music. Watch for more information here. I love holidays and hate to see everyone rushing through them. Enjoy Thanksgiving, and know that we are finishing up our event planning for December.

Remember that the library will be closed on Monday, November 11, for Veterans Day but will be open the rest of the week at regular times. We will also be closed on Thursday and Friday of Thanksgiving week (November 28th and 29th ) but open on Saturday at the usual time.

Regular programs are still going on, including Art Camp, which will be held on Thursdays, November 7th, and November 21st, at 3:30 PM. Makerspace, for those who love to experiment and create new scientific adventures, will be held on November 7th at 2 PM.

With everyone cleaning up their houses for the holidays, the library receives donations of all types. This is a reminder that when you donate materials to the library, they become library property to be distributed as needed. The library always gets the first choice of anything donated to us, and those donations save us thousands of dollars each year, which we then use to purchase new books. If the library cannot use a donation, it then goes into the book sale, where it generates funds to buy new computers for the public, provide programs for our children, and help with the summer reading program. If items do not sell after a certain amount of time, they are then donated to other organizations that can use them. We have always allowed our teachers to take any children’s book for free if they want to add it to their classroom library.

The library also takes donations of craft supplies, DVDs, and audiobooks. The staff appreciates it if the items are not donated in containers filled with spiders, dead bugs, mouse droppings, or mold growing inside the box. Yes, that has happened, and I am not always around to kill large, hairy spiders for my staff. If you have a question about donations, just call us at 406-287-3763.
