Proposed I-90 Resurfacing Near Whitehall

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) would like to announce and invite the public to comment on a proposal to resurface approximately 4 miles of Interstate 90 (I-90) near Whitehall. The project will begin at the Whitehall Interchange and extend east.

The proposed work includes removing all the existing asphalt, paving new asphalt, and finishing the work with a seal and cover (chip seal), new pavement markings, rumble strips, signage, and guardrail. Two steel culverts at the Whitetail Creek Crossing, east of the Whitehall Interchange, will also be replaced. The project aims to extend the roadway's service life, provide additional skid resistance, and take cost-effective action to preserve and maintain this section of I-90.

The project is tentatively scheduled for construction in 2027, depending on the completion of all project development activities and funding availability. No new right-of-way or utility relocations will be needed.

Partnering with the community is an important part of properly planning for future projects. The Montana Department of Transportation welcomes the public to provide ideas and comments on the proposed project. Comments may be submitted online at mdt.mt.gov/contact/comment-form.aspx or in writing to the Montana Department of Transportation, Butte office, PO Box 3068, Butte, MT 59702-3068. Please note that comments are for project UPN 10003001.

The public is encouraged to contact Butte District Preconstruction Engineer Brandon Jones at 406-494-9622 or Project Engineer Chauncey Boese at 406-494-9636 with questions or comments about the project.
