Ledger Looking Back 25 Years: 10/20/1999

Montana Lt. Governor and year 2000 gubernatorial candidate Judy Martz spent the afternoon of Friday, Oct. 15 in Whitehall, where she talked about the need for jobs and economic growth, visited with area residents interested in developing a tourist train between Whitehall and Twin Bridges and visited a couple local businesses.

The dispute between Rockin' the Rockies promoters and Mark Lundberg of Montana Insurance Services of Whitehall has not only been resolved, it has been resolved without cost.

American Legion Department Commander Art Sell, Department of Montana, was pleased to announce Post 132 had been chartered for Whitehall. American Legion Service officers assist in recovery of hundreds of millions in financial aid and services annually for America's veterans.

Whitehall High School Student of the Week was senior Liz Brown. She was nominated by art teacher Mike Battaiola who said, "Liz is a very talented young lady. She always puts much thought and effort into her artwork." Liz is the daughter of Mark and Sharon Brown, and has an interest in either a broadcast journalism career or in being an English teacher. She enjoys acting, singing, working at IGA, and talking to her friends in Maine.

Whitehall High School Athlete of the Week was Sarah Nelson nominated by cross country coach Don Masinelli. Sarah was the manager of the cross-country team, and according to Coach Don, "has been an extreme help to me...I hope she helps as manager again next year." Sarah is the daughter of Tracie Tocci and Chris Nelson. She plans to attend college to major in English and enjoys tennis and writing stories.

WHS Creative Leader of the Week was junior Mandy Simonich for being a valued member of the WHS choir. Choir director Mary Brazill said, "Mandy is a focused, conscientious and talented choir student." She would like to attend college on a rodeo scholarship and go into education. Mandy is the daughter of John and Debbie Simonich, and enjoys hunting, rodeo, and singing.
