The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) recently organized a tour of riparian-area restoration and management projects in the Belgrade and Whitehall areas to encourage healthier riparian zones. Cory and Diane Fitzgerald near Whitehall have a different management strategy. Along with managing cattle grazing on their riparian areas, they must also manage a large elk herd that has migrated to lower-elevation private ground due to recreational pressure in their traditional calving areas. Communities working together at the local level will enable policy to be changed to allow landowners the profitability they need to stay on the land.

Doug Bailey, Golden Sunlight Mine general manager, made a brief presentation to the Whitehall Chamber of Commerce on Thursday, Sept. 16 and said although the mine isn't in immediate danger of closing, low gold prices are forcing some difficult decisions at the mine. Bailey said members from the Placer Dome corporate offices will be visiting Golden Sunlight in October as part of an annual planning and budgeting process.

Jason Marker, waiting for a possible second trial in Jefferson County for felony aggravated assault and reportedly wanted in Michigan for burglarizing several businesses last month, was captured in Bozeman on Friday, Sept. 17.

Whitehall High School Student of the Week was freshman Nathan Peck. Mrs. Cogdill nominated him, and she says, "Nathan's positive attitude and conscientious efforts to improve his work" in Vo. English I earned him the honor. Nathan is the son of Mark and Judy Hall. He plans to attend college or join the army. He enjoys football and N-64.

Whitehall High School Athlete of the Week was Trojan quarterback John Feight, who threw for 140 yards and a touchdown and ran for a touchdown in Whitehall's 45-6 win over Big Timber. John also rushed for 39 yards, had 56 yards on punt returns, three tackles on defense, and one pass deflection. John, one of the Trojan team leaders, is a senior and the son of Dale Feight and Colleen Chatriand. He enjoys football, basketball, hunting, and water skiing.

WHS Creative Leader of the Week was senior Josh Trudgeon for his dedication and hard work in the Whitehall High School Band. Josh is the son of Fred and Charlotte Trudgeon, and has plans to go to college for aviation to become a pilot. He enjoys hunting, fishing, and "stuff" like that. Josh also enjoys wrestling - he took third at 98 pounds at the Montana State Wrestling tourney last season.
