Ledger Looking Back 25 Years: 9/8/1999

09/08/1999

Another Whitehall business was burglarized over the Labor Day weekend - making three downtown business burglaries in just over a month - although police officials say the third burglary appears unrelated to the first two. The Mint Bar was burglarized sometime after the bar closed Sunday, Sept. 5, and before 9:30 AM on Monday, and Whitehall police and the bar manager both say the job looked like the work of experienced burglars. Two other businesses - Janlyn's Styling Salon and the Two-Bit Saloon - were burglarized on August 2. Although no one has been apprehended in those burglaries, the Mint Bar burglary appears to be the work of different individuals.

The Whitehall School Board adopted the development of a drug and alcohol prevention program, continued vigilance in grades K-12 discipline, more improvements in the English/math/language curriculum, and additional work on teacher evaluations as board goals for the 1999-2000 school year.

Volunteers of the Week - They organize blood drives, chair school boards, clean up roadsides, paint murals, organize clothing drives, lead Girl Scouts, help run soccer programs, keep the Saddle Club in the saddle, keep the baseball league throwing strikes, and organize "Fun Days" for their peers. It's frightening to think where Whitehall would be without the gracious contributions of community volunteers. Thanks to Kelly Weber; Betty Brown, Laura Andersen, Matt Wagner, Seventh-day Adventist Kosovo clothing drive volunteers, Barb Sunderland, Kit Mather, Michelle Tebay, the mural paint crew, Dawndi Keim, Chris Fritts; I-90 cleanup crew; Lily Early, Kara Voeks, Mary Choquette and Brandon Momsen; Whitehall VFD; Whitehall Ambulance crew; John Jardine; and all volunteers for helping make Whitehall such a special place to live.

Whitehall Readers of the Week - They range in age from 3 years old to 78 years old. They read mysteries, science fiction, magazines, action novels, westerns, and almost anything else they can get their hands on. Collectively, they'll read over a thousand books this year, and "they" are the 1999 "Readers of the Week." Congratulations to Shane Callaghan, Stephanie Dueck, Matt Mulligan, Nelson Godbolt, Chris Timberlake, Michele Weldon, Mary E. Segraves, Gena Kraha, Matt Wideman, Loni Amos, John Rice, Elmer Baker, Cheyenne Neal, and the Ortman Family.

Whitehall Athletes of the Week - Bull riders, softball pitchers, goat tyers, race car drivers, star tournament bowlers, All-Around rodeo champs, baseball tournament MVPs, All-State football players, soccer stars, and more. Congratulations to our 1999 summer "Athletes of the Week": John Evans; Kim Franich and Lacy Ward; Mike Welch, Jeremy Fleege and Jamie Reiff; Jake Lehmann and Danny Twomey; Kay Ruckdaschel; Ty Nelson; Amber O'Donnell; Nick Wagner; Kyle Dosland; Whit Smith; Steve Clements; and Kathy Contway. Whitehall's athletes come in all sizes and shapes, ages, genders, and skill levels. They participate in a wide range of activities, and we salute all of Whitehall's athletes.
