Montana WILD Announces Free Events for Bear Aware Month in September

Registration is required for these free events. To register call 406-444-9941 or email Jeanne.connolly@mt.gov. Please include the name and age of all participants and a good contact phone number. Montana Wild is located at 2668 Broadwater Ave., just off U.S. Highway 12 West near Spring Meadow Lake State Park.

Bear Yoga: Wednesday, September 4, 4 PM to 4:30 PM. This month’s yoga poses will be inspired by the annual cycle of bears. Basic yoga postures will take us from a bear waking up in spring to going back to the den in fall. This class is designed for 3–7-year-olds. Participants are welcome to bring a mat or towel, but it is not required.

Bear Story Time: Tuesday, September 10, 4 PM to 4:45 PM. This time of year, bears are busy eating as much as they can to prepare for the long, cold winter. We will read a story about bears and then play a game where we will take on the role of bears searching for food. This program is great for young learners accompanied by an adult.

Bear Safety Skills: Thursday, September 19, 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM. How can you set up a bear-safe campsite? What should you do if you run into a bear on the trail? Where should you carry your bear spray, and how do you deploy it if you need to? Join staff from MT WILD, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest to go over these basics and more during this program that is great for the whole family. A portion of this program will be outdoors, so dress for the weather!

Drop-In Bear Activities: All Month! Stop by Montana WILD (M-F, 8 AM - 5 PM) for a plethora of bear crafts and activities! Read a bear book to earn a bear poster. Complete our bear scavenger hunt or quiz to win a bear sticker. Test your knowledge at bear trivia for a chance to win some bear spray. There is something for bear enthusiasts of all kinds!
