Serving Southern Jefferson County in the Great State of Montana
AUGUST 25, 1999
A cross-section of Whitehall community members met on Monday, August 23, to develop a list of education priorities to recommend to the Whitehall School Board, and the number one priority came as no surprise to school and community observers: drug and alcohol prevention. The 29 community members participating in the meeting were allowed to vote for three top priorities from a list of 18 possibilities. The top four recommended to the school board were: 1) drug and alcohol prevention; 2) a Spanish course; 3) offer calculus and AP math; and 4) improve middle school discipline.
The communities of Whitehall, Glasgow, and Red Lodge were selected to participate in an eight-month assessment process designed to help Montana communities determine how tourism can diversify and expand their local economies.
Whitehall Reader of the Week was Cheyenne Neal, who is "almost four" and already has a collection of 230 books at home to read. Her mother, Tracy, reads to Cheyenne daily. "We read in the morning, we read in the afternoon, and we read at night. Anytime is a good time to read," said Tracy. Cheyenne's favorite books are "Crazy Clothes" and "My Granny." On August 18-19, Cheyenne checked out and paged through over 50 books.
Whitehall Volunteers of the Week. The Whitehall Ambulance crew provides a vital service to community members and travelers. While ambulance crews are paid minimum wage for each ambulance run, they donate hundreds of hours of their own time to the community of Whitehall. Thanks to the entire Whitehall Ambulance crew - Dean Briggs, Marc Groy, Rosanna Hengst, Elana Icenoggle, Marty Johnson, Bob Peterson, Terry Ross, Rich Smith, Francine Stevison, Kerry Weightman, and Gilbert Uehling.
Whitehall Athlete of the Week was Mandy Chatriand. Mandy isn't the only junior on the Lady Trojan basketball team, but she is the only player coming off two knee surgeries in the last two years. As a freshman basketball player, Mandy tore a ligament in her left knee that required surgery. As a sophomore, she tore a ligament in her right knee that required surgery. Mandy's dedication and attitude have earned her "Athlete of the Week" honors even before the first game.
