Ledger Looking Back 25 Years: 8/4/1999

MDT contracted with Camp Dresser & McKee (CDM), a construction engineering and consulting firm in Helena, to engineer and design the project to reconstruct Whitehall Street from the I-90 underpass to Legion Avenue. The project was .6 miles long and slated for total reconstruction starting in late summer of 2001. The project cost was estimated at $1.6 million, but it was cautioned that that was a ‘rough’ estimate based only on preliminary studies; it was needed for Whitehall Street to meet safety standards and regulations and to improve drainage on what had become one of Whitehall’s more notorious roads for poor runoff, mud pots, and impromptu ponds.

Two Whitehall businesses were burglarized early Monday morning, August 2, and an undisclosed amount of cash was reported stolen at both locations. Janlyn's Beauty Salon and the Two-Bit Saloon were broken into sometime after 2:00 AM. Whitehall Town Marshal Topper Giono said the burglaries had similar patterns and were possibly done by the same person. Giono said no employers were in either business during the burglaries, and no injuries were reported. He said both businesses sustained some damage, mainly broken glass at the points of entry.

Whitehall Reader of the Week was Loni Amos, who will be a senior at WHS in the fall. Loni says she has been an avid reader since fourth grade and has read six books already this summer. She says, "Reading helps me get away from everything." She enjoys science fiction, Anne McCaffery books, and fantasy-with vivid descriptions of dragons and other people and animals.

Whitehall Athlete of the Week was Kyle Dosland, a 15-year-old who, concluding his first year of bowling, was selected for the Montana YABA All-Star bowling team. Kyle placed first in all events at the recent YABA tournament in Helena. In division five, Kyle took the singles crown, placed first in handicap bowling, and bowled on the first-place Division Four team. After a disappointing league year in Whitehall, Kyle starred in the tournament and was the first-ever Whitehall bowler on the All-Star team.

Whitehall Volunteers of the Week were the I-90 interchange clean-up crew, including Bill Brown, Merrill Davis, Mike McLean, Holly Richardson, Al Peterson, Ilen Stoll, Gunner Halvorson, Barbara Brown, six members of the Butte Mile High Lions Club, and the Skypark Homeowners Association. These people worked hard to clean up the area around the I-90 interchange in Whitehall - mowing, weeding, and general cleanup. Dick Capp of the Dept. of Transportation supplied bags and signage. Thanks for giving your time and energy to beautify Whitehall to benefit us all.
