Serving Southern Jefferson County in the Great State of Montana

Ledger Looking Back 25 Years: 7/28/1999

JULY 28, 1999

About 30 Whitehall residents took advantage of an opportunity on Thursday, July 22, to view two new Jefferson County promotional videos and learn more about the goals and accomplishments of the Jefferson Local Development Corporation (JLDC). The videos received their Whitehall premiere at the Jefferson County Extension Office meeting room, and people who attended the event departed with their copy of a video promoting Jefferson County as a tourist destination location.

Firefighters from Whitehall and Twin Bridges responded to a fire south of Whitehall on Saturday, July 24, and although no one was injured, the fire destroyed the home of Dave and Jenny Scott. The fire started in the kitchen and rapidly spread upstairs in the two-story home off Highway 55. Fire, smoke, and water damage made the house a total loss, but Ron Fuller, chief of the Whitehall Volunteer Fire Department, said some items inside the house were saved. Ten Whitehall firefighters and four Whitehall VFD trucks responded to the emergency call. The Scott dairy facilities were not damaged.

A quick response by the U.S. Forest Service firefighters and the Whitehall Volunteer Fire Department helped contain a wildfire near the Toll Mountain area west of Whitehall to about six acres. The fire started the afternoon of Sunday, July 25, and Forest Service officials have indicated the apparent cause was an escaped campfire.

Whitehall Reader of the Week was eight-year-old Matt Wideman. He has read 40 hours in the library summer reading program and enjoys the "Soup" series and western books about cowboys. His favorite time to read is "At night when I'm in bed, because I'm by myself and my brother (Ben) can't bother me." Ben is an avid reader, too, and was a "Reader of the Week" last year. Matt will be in third grade in the fall.

Whitehall Volunteer of the Week was Chris Fritts, the volunteer treasurer of the Whitehall Baseball League. Chris was also in charge of keeping the league's concession stand stocked and staffed, and she and her husband Dan donated their generator to give the stand power. Chris organized the league BBQ and the Frontier Days concession stand with the "Walking Tacos." Chris has given 20-30 hours a week to the league.

Whitehall Athlete of the Week was Whitehall's Nick Wagner who entered the Whitehall Frontier Days NRA Rodeo ranked ninth in bull riding. Nick had about a six second ride in Whitehall during the Saturday rodeo performance and just missed a qualifying ride on one of Lillian Rodeo's more temperamental bulls. Nick was ranked as high as sixth earlier in the year. He had plenty of "non-qualifying" company in Whitehall - only one cowboy had a qualifying ride.
