Just Ask Georgia: 7/17/2024

Georgia, I have a question,

Our nanny quit on us Thursday night. She was involved in a car accident on Thursday morning and let us know right away that she could not make it that day as she had a broken femur and a cracked rib.

I reminded her that she doesn’t have any sick days when watching my children and told her she needed to be available by Friday morning; otherwise, I would begin looking for a new nanny.

She told me I was rude and inconsiderate and should have asked if she needed something or if she was okay instead of forcing her with an ultimatum. My husband and I found her to be very dramatic. What are your thoughts on this?

New Nanny Needed

Dear Needed,

What you NEED is some compassion. The femur is not only the largest, strongest bone in the body but also has major arteries near it - she could have had severe bleeding or blood clots and most likely is going to need surgery and rehabilitation for this injury.

You are in the wrong here. Yes, you would need to address the situation with her once her path to healing was established - but this JUST happened to her that morning, and you can’t even fathom giving her a DAY to get her wits about her and deal with the injury and pain, without threatening the loss of her job? YOU are the dramatic one. I hope you at least acted a BIT concerned when she told you of her injuries.

Do this poor girl a favor and let her find a better family to nanny for. I feel bad for your children, as it sounds like they are losing someone very caring and, in the meantime, will be left with you.

With love, Georgia
