Whitehall Chamber Corner: Celebrate Independent Retailer Month in Whitehall

Hey, Whitehall Chamber members and local businesses! July is Independent Retailer Month, and it's time to spotlight our fantastic local shops. This annual event encourages everyone to shop local and celebrates the indie retailers that make our community vibrant and sustainable.

What is Independent Retailer Month? Running throughout July, this shop local initiative emphasizes the positive impact of independent retailers on our economy and community. It's a time to support the businesses that create jobs, enhance local character, and foster sustainable practices.

Why Participate? Independent retailers contribute significantly to our local economy. By shopping locally, we can:

• Boost our community's economy

• Create jobs

• Support local charities and events

• Reduce environmental impact with shorter supply chains

Independent Retailer Month started from the combined efforts of Tom Shay and Kerry Bannigan. Tom launched "National Independent Retailer Week" in 2003, and Kerry initiated "Independent Retail Week" in 2009 across major US cities. Their shared vision led to the establishment of Independent Retailer Month in July 2011, promoting the importance of local merchants globally.

We encourage all Whitehall businesses to join this celebration. Here's how you can participate:

• Host special events or promotions in your store (see the Activity Idea Bank)

• Share your story and successes with the Chamber office

• Use social media to highlight your business and the importance of shopping local

Let's work together to make Whitehall a hub of thriving independent retailers. Share your participation with us at the Chamber office so we can spread the word and celebrate your contributions. Happy Independent Retailer Month, Whitehall! Let's shop local and make a difference!
