On Tuesday, June 18, 2024, a group of enthusiastic explorers, including Whitehall Chamber Executive Director Chiara Schober, embarked on the Frontline Tour with Southwest Montana, ready to delve into our region's rich history and stunning scenery. If you're from Whitehall and have yet to experience Virginia City and Nevada City, consider this your call to adventure!
The day began with a bright and early departure from the Butte-Silver Bow Chamber of Commerce. The drive was a treat in itself, with Schober sharing much about Whitehall's Lewis and Clark Murals and many upcoming events from the Enchanted Faire to Frontier Days as the bus made its way to the picturesque town of Laurin via Highway 287. Their first pause was in Laurin, where they admired the historic St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church. This stunning piece of architecture, dedicated in 1901, is a testament to the area's rich cultural heritage and was the perfect start to this historical journey.
They then continued on Highway 287 to Nevada City, a true gem of Montana. They wandered through the Nevada City Old Town Museum and the enchanting Music Hall. Stepping into these places felt like traveling back in time, offering a tangible glimpse into Montana's storied past. The adventure continued as they boarded the Alder Gulch Railroad for a scenic 20-minute ride to Virginia City. The journey was filled with breathtaking views. Upon arrival, they made their way to the Opera House. The Virginia City Players, renowned for their captivating performances, gave the group a short tour. Next, they jumped on the Historic Fire Truck Tour, which offered a unique perspective on Virginia City's landmarks. The tour was informative and entertaining, giving them a deeper appreciation of the town's rich history. With a few hours of free time, the group could explore Virginia City at their own pace. Whether grabbing a bite to eat, shopping for unique souvenirs, or simply soaking in the atmosphere, there was something for everyone. The town's vibrant yet nostalgic ambiance made every moment enjoyable.
The group reconvened at Cousin's Candy Shop, where the delicious array of sweets was a hit with everyone. It's a must-visit for any candy lover and a delightful way to conclude this visit to Virginia City. They departed Virginia City and headed towards Ennis via Highway 287. The scenic route offered more beautiful vistas, making the drive enjoyable and relaxing. They finally made their way back to Butte with hearts full of newfound appreciation for the treasures of Southwest Montana.
