Serving Southern Jefferson County in the Great State of Montana
June 9, 1999
Jefferson County Attorney Valerie Wilson filed a motion with Montana District Judge Frank Davis on June 7, accusing Davis of abusing his discretion when he ordered a new trial for Jason Marker. Attached to the brief, Wilson submitted ten signed affidavits of the jurors who convicted Marker as proof that the jury was not confused when it reached its verdict.
This month, the Silver Star post office celebrated its 130th birthday, and the people of Silver Star planned quite a party. Sometime between 1867 and 1869, the first log cabin was built in what became Silver Star, and on June 15, 1869, a post office was established.
Whitehall's Wally Madsen had some time to kill in Helena a while ago and drifted into the shopping mall to buy an Orange Julius. While sipping on his Orange Julius, he saw a 1967 StingRay Corvette on display and remembered looking at that same model on the showroom floor 22 years earlier. He found out the Corvette was the grand prize in a raffle drawing for WestMont, a home health care provider, and he bought a single ticket. WestMont sold over 2,000 tickets, and Wally Madsen had the winning ticket.
Jan and Todd Breitenfeldt of Whitehall are leaders of a 20-person group leaving June 9 for an 18-day tour of Europe that will take the group from England through France and Italy to Greece. The European Showcase tour is through EF Educational Tours, and this is the second European trip Todd and Jan have taken as leaders. They also took a group in 1997.
Whitehall Athlete of the Week was John Evans, Whitehall White Sox fireballer. John struck out 11 in the 12-3 win on June 1 and got two hits to pace the White Sox. A Boulder umpire said John's pitching was the best the ump had seen in six years of umpiring youth baseball. In the White Sox 8-7 extra-inning win on June 5, Evans made the final out with a terrific catch in center field.
Whitehall Reader of the Week was Stephanie Dueck, who reads about 150 books annually. She enjoys non-fiction autobiographies – her favorite being Chuck Yeagher's autobiography. She also enjoys Ralph Moody books written in the 1940s, old Americana-type books, and Agnes Morley-Cleveland's No Life for a Lady. Her favorite recent book is Traver's Corner by Scott Waldie.
Whitehall Volunteer of the Week was Betty Brown because of her 22 years as blood drawing chairperson for Whitehall. She has organized close to 100 blood draws for the American Red Cross. In a Red Cross newsletter in 1997, there was a quote that read, "It is people like Betty Brown who keep the Town of Whitehall moving ahead." Betty was in a car accident in November 1998 and still has lingering dizziness, but she hopes to return soon to her job at The Corner Store.
