Whitehall High School was vandalized for the third time this spring when acid was poured on the desk and carpet of a science room sometime during the night of May 22. Paul Stremick, the school superintendent, said he is unsure how access to the school was gained and said no estimate of the damage was available.

The Jefferson County Commission approved a noxious weed agreement on May 26 that continues funding for the Whitehall High School greenhouse and insectary sites. Up to 6,000 weevils and other bugs will be nurtured for biological control of spotted knapweed and Dalmatian toadflax. The $6,750 grant is funded through the Jefferson County Weed District and the Montana Department of Agriculture. It will pay for two Whitehall students to maintain the greenhouse and insectary sites throughout the summer.

Whitehall Athletes of the Week were the Trojan State Track Meet Placers. Whitehall seniors Kietra Mabbott and Mike Welch each earned state track titles, and Jorn Johnson, Kate Mulligan, Mitch Cunningham, and Derek Dean all placed at the Montana State Class B Track Meet in Helena on May 28-29. Mabbott won the long jump and placed in the triple jump, and Welch won the triple jump and placed in the long jump.

Whitehall Reader of the Week was twelve-year-old Shane Callaghan, the first "Reader of the Week" in 1999. Shane, who will be a seventh grader next fall, says he reads over 100 "thick" books every year. Shane likes Sherlock Holmes mysteries and all kinds of books. "You have a lot more adventure reading than sitting home watching television," says Shane.

Whitehall Volunteer of the Week was Kelly Weber, the first "Volunteer" in the summer tribute to volunteerism. Kelly has been a Girl Scout volunteer for three years and is also an active volunteer in the Homeschool Association, the John Gregory Library, the Adopt-a-Highway program, 4-H, and the Whitehall Baseball League. Kelly and husband Ken have four children - Stephan, Mary Margret, Ryan, and Luke.
