Serving Southern Jefferson County in the Great State of Montana
On Monday, May 13th, early childhood educators and partners met to discuss how local programs can best meet the needs of pre-kindergarten children and their families.
The newly formed coalition discussed many future issues but agreed to focus on two current primary needs: alerting families of a June deadline that limits education options and creating a one-application system so families could apply for all Pre-K programs for which they are eligible.
The Whitehall Elementary School hosted a screening for its Transitional Kindergarten class on May 3rd. Because the funding for this program focuses on literacy, all 2024/2025 participants must qualify by the end of June. By law, no new students can be enrolled after that date. A possible second screening may be necessary. While Kristi’s Kiddie Korner and Rocky Mountain Head Start can accept later applications, early registration is especially important. This established program could be removed if Head Start does not enroll thirteen pupils. As Kristi adapts to its new location, planning to meet the needs of its increased capacity is proving to be a challenge.
The Community Preschool Application process was introduced based on a system used in Anaconda. The Jefferson Valley Early Education Coalition prioritized forming a model to use by the 2025/2026 school year. The vision is to offer the best fit for each pre-kindergarten child and family in Whitehall, Cardwell, and surrounding areas.
