Voters in both Whitehall and Cardwell approved proposed increases in property tax mill levies during the May 18 school elections. Whitehall voters approved a $21,807 mill levy for the Whitehall High School by an 181-116 vote.

Depressed gold prices claimed 28 more victims on May 18 when Golden Sunlight Mine announced it reduced its workforce by 28 employees. The mine employs 209, so the layoffs - about a 14 percent workforce reduction - will reduce the Golden Sunlight workforce to 181. Gold prices are hovering below $280 per ounce, and Golden Sunlight officials have said the mine needs at least $350 per ounce of gold to stay cash-positive.

A May 14 dispute between Whitehall Mayor Dale Davis and Whitehall Townman Ron Robertson prompted a special town council meeting on May 18, where the council voted to create a temporary supervisory buffer between Davis and Robertson. In other Whitehall town government news, Jerry Warden, the town water superintendent, terminated his employment after the May 10 council meeting. Sue Downs, town clerk, said she is resigning for personal family reasons effective June 18.

The Butte-Anaconda Job Service office placed a computer in the John Gregory Memorial Library to help area job searchers find work.

Whitehall Student of the Week was sophomore Joe Wilson. Physical education teacher Mike Welch said Joe has "a good attitude, is very competitive, and is an all-around good student. Joe is the son of Renee and Jim Webster. He plans to attend college to become a lawyer after high school. Joe enjoys playing and coaching baseball.

Whitehall Athlete of the Week was Lady Trojan's #1 singles tennis player, Jenny Dawson. Jenny, a senior, won a 6-4, 7-5 thriller to take third place at the Southern B Divisional Tennis Tournament held in Whitehall. Jenny had a 5-1 record at the tournament and was the only Whitehall player to advance to the state tournament. She is the daughter of Mike and Anne Marie Carey.

WHS Creative Leader of the Week was junior Anna Tolf. Drama coach Larry Brazill nominated Anna "for her enthusiasm and willingness to contribute to the success of the group." Anna is the daughter of Eric and Mary Tolf and plans to attend college. She enjoys skiing, basketball, soccer, camping, and water skiing.
