Serving Southern Jefferson County in the Great State of Montana

Between the Stacks: 5/15/2024

The 21st Century Friday students took a step back in time at the library. This month, they have been exploring pioneer life with the library staff as they made covered wagons and then discovered they could make butter by themselves. After "finger" churning for 20 minutes, the students opened their jars to see sweet, creamy butter lumps. They then learned to salt and wash the butter, how to store it, and how different it tastes from modern products. Their butter was then served with fresh honey on bread. This week, they will make toys from yarn, buttons, and other items that pioneer children would have had access to.

May and June calendars are out at the front desk. We almost have the entire summer lined up, but we still need people to help with summer feeding. Two days a week, we need someone to pick up our lunches in Butte. They need a pickup truck or a large vehicle that will fit multiple coolers inside of it. The staff in Butte will load the lunches, so this person only needs to bring them to the library, where we will have staff waiting to unload them. If you want to help feed 170 children in Whitehall this summer, please call the library at 287- 3763 or stop by the front desk for more information.

History Book Club and Rockhounding will both meet on May 20th due to the Memorial Day holiday. History Book Club will meet at 5 PM, and Rockhounding will meet at 5:30 PM. Both programs are open to the public. The library will be closed on Memorial Day but open the rest of the week for regular hours.

The Mystery Book Club will meet on May 21st at 5 PM. This will be a fun meeting with all of the new mystery series and new titles added to old collections. Mystery remains one of the top bestselling genres, and cozy mystery titles are coming out by the hundreds! If you love a good who-done-it, this is the book club for you!

The book sale is filling up again from recent discards and donations. These are great books to take on vacation or read around the house. The book sale proceeds go to the Friends of the Whitehall Community Library for our children's and young adult programs and other needed items (like new computers). Hardback books are 20 cents each, and paperbacks are 10 cents each. There is no limit on the number of books one can buy, so come and stock up for summer!
