Cottontail Astronomical Observatory Begins 2024 Season May 11

The Cottontail Astronomical Observatory in Twin Bridges, Montana, will open its doors for its first public night for the 2024 season on May 11th.

The observatory hosts various free events throughout the year, though donations are greatly appreciated. Owners Joe and Gwen Witherspoon invite everyone to take part in a visit to the observatory.

The weather plays a big part in these events; overcast skies block out the stars, as does rain and snow, and winds greater than 15 MPH move the telescopes. In such an event, the Witherspoons will give an astronomical presentation you can understand. Dress warm as it cools down at these starting times. If there are clear skies, the public night will begin with a laser tour of the night sky, pointing out the constellations and some astronomical objects. After the tour, attendees will start viewing objects with telescopes.

2024 Schedule:

• May 11: 9:30 PM

• June 8: 10:30 PM

• July 6: 10:30 PM

• August 3: 9:30 PM

• September 7: 8:30 PM

• November 2: 7:30 PM

• December 28: 7 PM

Directions to the observatory from Twin Bridges: go three miles on Hwy 287 towards Sheridan. Turn left onto Wet Georgia Road, which is a gravel road. A sign on the fence reads “Cottontail Observatory 3 miles.” Go through three cattle guards; after the third cattle guard, take the road on the left. Go one mile, through another cattle guard, then take a right; there you will find the observatory. If you have any questions, please get in touch with Joe Witherspoon at (406) 842-7722.
