Fifth Disease, caused by Parvo Virus, Hits Whitehall Elementary

An email from the Whitehall School nurses went out to students and parents on Wednesday, April 3, 2024, informing families that Fifth disease appears to have made its way into Whitehall Elementary.

“We have had a number of elementary students with what appears to be Fifth disease over the last few weeks, but finally have a provider diagnosis to confirm it. It is caused by parvovirus B19,” the email stated.

The nurses went on to detail that Fifth disease starts as a runny nose, sore throat, and fatigue. A few days later, the student has noticeable bright red cheeks followed by a lacey rash that can be anywhere on the body. They added that a number of students they have seen have it on their arms. Some students have complained that the rash itches. This is contagious during the symptoms but not the rash.

Fifth disease is one of the six most common viral rashes in children. It typically affects children between 5 and 15 years old, especially in the spring and summer months.

Parvovirus B19 causes fifth disease; this virus is common and very contagious. Infected people can spread it through coughing or sneezing. If your child is exhibiting these symptoms, please keep them home.

In most cases, fifth disease isn’t a serious medical condition. It often goes away with minimal or no treatment.

Fifth disease is a concern if you are pregnant, so notify your OB/GYN if you think you have been exposed. Adults report stiff joints for weeks to months when they have Fifth disease.
