Ledger Looking Back 25 Years: 4/14/1999

APRIL 14, 1999

For the first time in over a decade, Whitehall voters will be voting in a school mill levy election. The Whitehall School Board voted unanimously to place a WHS mill levy on the ballot. The amount of money sought, and the exact hike in mills are yet undetermined; Superintendent Paul Stremick said that the levy would be an increase of $24,000 in the worst-case scenario.

A crowd of about 70 people turned out at LaHood Park on April 12, 1999, to discuss - and at times cuss - the Rockin' the Rockies concert, a classic rock concert slated for LaHood on August 6-8, 1999. Comments ranged from compliments from the county commissioners to Steve Wendell of LaHood and organizer John Klingbeil for their proactive approach to Cardwell residents Wendell and Ivy Oliverson, who live closest to LaHood, voicing concerns over just driving up and down the road due to drunk drivers and other unruly behavior. The concert hopes to draw up to 15,000; bands Journey, Foreigner, Nazareth, and others are scheduled to play.

WHS Creative Leader of the Week was senior Nicole Robbins for her work in choir, nominated by director Mary Brazill. Nicole is the daughter of Dean and Crystal Robbins and has plans to attend beauty school in Billings.

Whitehall Athlete of the Week was senior Kietra Mabbott, who kicked off the 1999 track season by winning three events (100 meters, long jump, and triple jump). Kietra is the daughter of Brent and Sandi Mabbot and plans to study sports science at the University of Idaho in Moscow.

Whitehall Student of the Week was junior Stephanie Nix for her work in psychology class with Terry Kelly. Stephanie is the daughter of Patty Harris and Mark Nix and enjoys listening to music, dancing, and her friends.
