Borden's Hotel, a landmark building in downtown Whitehall since 1913, was purchased by Marion and Duane Alberts of Whitehall and reopened for business on February 16th. Sunday afternoon dancing, a 40-year tradition at Borden's, resumed on February 21st and the Alberts said the tradition would be maintained.
A group of volunteers was working to provide nest boxes and know-how to encourage recovery of the mountain bluebird population, which once was in deep decline. Volunteers were needed in the Boulder and surrounding areas.
The Madison County Planning Board at its February 22nd meeting decided to postpone a decision on the major subdivision near the Jefferson River proposed by Doug and Valerie McCollum. About a dozen landowners near the proposed 27-lot subdivision attended the planning board hearing, and about half of them spoke during the meeting.
Whitehall Student of the Week was junior Russell Woodland. Chuck Petersen nominated Russell for his citizenship and for helping pilot a program for teaching English as a second language to the foreign exchange students at WHS. Russell is the son of Pat and Walt Woodland. He has self-employment, marriage, and children in his future plans. He enjoys 4-wheeling, snowboarding, soccer, and hiking.
Whitehall Student of the Week was senior Mike Welch who had become a defensive standout for the Trojan basketball team. Mike was second on the team in steals, ranks third in assists, and is shooting 53 percent from the floor. He received praise from Coach Jeff Kreis for the intensity he brings to the basketball court. Mike is also the State Class B triple jump champ. He is the son of Mike and Cindy Welch.
Whitehall Creative Leader of the Week was Laura Dillon. Drama coach Larry Brazill nominated Laura for her "good work and leadership at State Thespian Festival and in the play The Baseball Show." Laura is the daughter of Charlene and Joe Dillon. She is a junior at WHS and has plans to attend college to major in music education. Laura enjoys piano, choir, drama, and band.
