Strength Training Program for Seniors

For many of us, exercising alone isn’t as enjoyable as doing it with others. For the past three months, community members have gathered at the Assembly of God Church in Whitehall to exercise together.

For one hour, twice a week, you can find these fit folks moving around with dumbbells and ankle weights – doesn’t that sound fun? MSU Extension brought this strength training program to Whitehall after community members voiced interest in it, expanding upon the newly launched programs in Sheridan and Ennis. The class is open to all, there is no age minimum or maximum, and no prerequisite for weight training experience. Exercises include bicep curls, shoulder presses, squats, and hamstring curls, just to name a few. Weights are provided and there is no fee to participate. Community members Donna Weldon and Teresa Young are the class leaders – a big thank you to Donna and Teresa for stepping up to lead their peers!

This strength-based exercise program aims to provide meaningful physical activity while creating a sense of community among participants. Attendees of the class recently shared that they felt physically stronger, had more energy, slept better, had less joint pain, and overall felt that their health improved.

If you have any questions about the class, don’t hesitate to reach out to Kaleena Miller at the MSU Extension Office, 103 West Legion Ave, Kaleena.miller1@montana.edu 406-287-3282.
