Ledger Looking Back 25 Years: 11/18/1998

The Montana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) was considering assessing Golden Sunlight Mine fines for four separate violations stemming from a cyanide leak reported in August.

Four major road construction projects were slated for the Whitehall-Jefferson Valley area in 1999, two more were scheduled for 2000, and up to eight more projects were proposed for the next decade.

Volunteer work crews from Baptist churches in Billings, Three Forks, Dillon, and Butte helped local volunteers put up the trusses and roof of the new addition to the Jefferson Valley Baptist Church in Whitehall on Saturday, November 14. Pastor David Rogers said worship will resume at the church shortly after Thanksgiving and worship in the new sanctuary will begin in 1999.

Whitehall Student of the Week was junior Sienna Paquin. Sienna was nominated by teacher Terry Kelly for her commendable work in U.S. History. Sienna is the daughter of Ralph and Kathy Paquin. She has plans to attend college at MSU Bozeman. Sienna enjoys soccer and camping.

Whitehall Athlete of the Week was sophomore Tavery Reher for her dedication to cheerleading. Supervisor Teresa Gnerer said Tavery was great with the crowd, a leader, and responsible. Tavery is the daughter of Jerry and step-mom Roberta Reher. She would like to attend college and be a police officer. Tavern enjoys riding horses, all sports, and hanging out with friends.

WHS Creative Leader of the Week was Tanner Gooch for his role as "Toad" in the WHS Drama Club presentation of The Wind in the Willows. Director Larry Brazill commended Tanner for his leadership and the energy he expended in the play. Tanner is a junior and the son of Bill and Chris Gooch. He has plans to attend college for business management. Tanner enjoys hunting, fishing, and eating.
