Athletic Hall of Fame Announces Nominations

The 2023 WHS Athletic Hall of Fame nominations have been announced, with induction being planned for Frontier Days 2024. Three individuals, one team, and one contributor were brought for nomination to the board.

LAYNE GLAUS: Nominated by Ed Simon, Layne Glaus was a three-sport WHS athlete from 2002 to 2006, participating in cross country, basketball, and track.

“Watching Layne play in high school was electrifying as there were several games when he put his team on his shoulders and carried them to a victory,” said Simon in his nomination paperwork.

Glaus continues to make a name for himself, being noted by Simon as one of the best high school coaches in Montana; he revived a struggling program in Livingston by leading them to the State Tournament. He is presently coaching boys basketball in Manhattan Christian where he has guided the Eagles to a third-place finish at state and then back-to-back state championship victories.

KERRY SACRY: Nominated by Shane Shaw, Kerry Sacry was an all-state athlete in three sports (football, basketball, and track).

“Kerry was perhaps the finest athlete in a family of great athletes...Kerry was the outstanding athlete in WHS at a time when Whitehall produced championship teams in multiple sports,” said Shaw of his nomination.

Sacry’s contributions to Trojan sports continued as he coached girls’ basketball, cross country, track and field, tennis, and golf.

NELS NELSON: Nomination by Michael Hedegaard, Nels is arguably the best wrestler to ever compete for the Trojans as the only three-time State Wrestling Champion and four-time State Finalist in the school’s history. His overall high school record was 107-9-2 and he was also a four-time Division Champion. Nelson was selected as one of the top 25 wrestlers to have ever competed in the State of Montana by the Montana Sports Top 20 list published in 2017.

1983 AMERICAN LEGION WHITEHALL RENEGADES BASEBALL TEAM: Nominated by Shane Shaw, the 1983 team had an outstanding season capped by winning the Class B State title. They played to advance to the Class A state tournament with larger city teams but lost to the Bozeman Bucks in a three-game series.

DOUG & ARCYLLE SHAW: Nominated by Ed Simon, the Shaw have been lifelong supporters of WHS athletics, giving hundreds of hours not only in the stands supporting their own children, but behind the scenes as well.

The WHS Athletic Hall of Fame, founded in 2015, has a mission to identify and honor the outstanding accomplishments of former athletes, coaches, administrators, teams, and contributors of WHS. Athletes are eligible for nomination 10 years after their class’s graduation. Athletes must have competed in a WHS-sanctioned varsity sport and must have excelled in that sport. Among the accomplishments taken into account will be individual and team accomplishments. Also considered are individual school or team records held. Applicants are evaluated on their impact on teams and the overall athletic program at WHS during their era and accomplishments thereafter.
