I just finished reading James Patterson's new Women's Murder Club novel, "The 23rd Midnight" and it started me thinking about why mysteries are so popular after decades of different authors and titles. The first reason patrons tell me they are such mystery fans is almost all mysteries are series with anywhere from 3 to 40 different books. The familiarity with the settings, characters, and type of mystery gives them comfort that the next book will be like meeting old friends for a new adventure.

The second reason is mystery readers tend to be puzzle solvers. They enjoy trying to guess who did it long before finishing the book and enjoy it most when the author plays fair by giving them all the clues to solve the case. They don't like authors who suddenly reveal new information at the end of the book or come up with some totally unbelievable scenario that has nothing to do with the rest of the book.

The third reason is mystery readers love to swap authors and series titles with friends and gain new insights into books they have already read. When patrons ask me what new mysteries I have read, we almost always walk away from each other with a new list of books both of us want to read. Different readers like different types of mysteries, different locations, different detectives, and different levels of crime scene description.

If you have never read a mystery or want to find others who enjoy the genre, come to the Mystery Book Club on the third Tuesday of the month, May 16th this month, at 5 PM at the Library.

New members are always welcome, and it is a great place to meet new friends with the same interests.

Everyone shares different mysteries they have read during the month and discovers new mysteries which have been added to the collection.

Friday, May 12, Deanna Mydland will be here for Storytime and STEM camp. This is the last time she will be here for PBSKids so don't miss a chance to enjoy a fabulous program and say goodbye. She has done an amazing job educating our preschool readers and we will miss her greatly!

The Rockhounding group will meet on Monday, May 15th at 5:30 PM. Get ready for an evening of show and tell, new discoveries, and field trip planning. This group is having so much fun, I backed their meeting time to 5:30 PM!! If you have any interest in minerals, gems, crystals, fossils, or geology, this is the group for you.

For more programming information just stop by and pick up a calendar at the front desk.
