Just Ask Georgia: 4/12/2023

Georgia, I have a question,

Do my parents have the right to call my children whatever they want as names, even if that isn’t what I named them?

Long story short, my parents think my twins - Ezra and Esme - have “immature” names because they aren’t traditional. So both of my parents have started calling them Theodore and Winifred. Isn’t this wrong of them to do? They don’t seem to see it as a problem.

Double Named Twins

Dear Double,

Wow. I’ve heard of grandparents giving their grands a nickname, but never an ENTIRELY different name! Yes, this is going to cause so much confusion for your twins, especially if they are with your parents often. Sit down and talk it out with your folks - maybe there is an underlying reason you aren’t aware of.

Georgia, I have a question,

My 20-year-old daughter wants to move in with us until she is finished with college. She says she will pay her portion of the bills as well as rent - but she is a grown adult! How do I tell her that adults leave the nest?

Still at Home

Dear Still,

Let me get this straight...your twenty-year-old, who is pursuing a college degree, wants to move in to save a bit of money? In addition, she’s offered to pay bills AND rent. And you have a problem with this?

Sounds like you are one of those parents who think 18 and done. Your child is trying to be responsible and work towards a respectable goal for her future, and it seems you may be the irresponsible one. Granted, there may be more to this than I know, but take a look at what she is asking, how much it would help her, why you are so against it, and decide whether or not saying no would be unhealthy for your relationship. Good luck.
