Alpaca breeders from across the country traveled to Denver March 17-19, 2023 to participate in the 34th Annual Mazuri AOA National Alpaca Show presented by Eagle Eye Farm. Heart & Soul Alpacas and Guest Cabins from Whitehall, owned and operated by Whitehall resident Karen Ball, won big, bringing just four beautiful specimens to the competition. This show is the largest in the country, being held at the National Western Complex in Denver.
Ball's alpacas brought back two first-place trophies, two reserve champions, and two third places in several categories.
The alpacas competiting, two breeds Huacaya (alpacas which look like teddy bears) and two Suri (known for their dreadlocks) showed the impressive breeding program of Heart & Soul Alpacas, which is one of just a few farms to raise both breeds. Ball's alpacas also brought home the Classic Breeder Cup for Huacayas.
"It's very prestigious to place in this show," said Ball, whose alpacas were judged on conformation and fleece qualities; over 700 alpacas were in the competition. "For two of our alpacas, it was their first time showing and they placed third. It's an honor."
Heart & Soul Alpacas and Guest Cabins is located at 26 Bench Road in Whitehall. It is owned and operated by Ball, with assistance from her partner Russell Ratti. Heart & Soul offers an onsite store that is available by appointment, as well as guest cabins and special events. Look for their alapaca baby shower event, coming soon!
