Ledger Looking Back 25 Years: March 1, 1998

Jeff Brown would be staying in prison, probably for at least another two years. Brown, who fired six shots into the Two-Bit Saloon in 1991 and was a passenger in the car driven by his brother that hit and killed Mona Ness and severely injured Theresa Wilkinson, was denied parole on March 26 by a 2-1 vote.

Snowpack in the Jefferson River drainage, measured prior to the snow that fell on March 27 in southwestern Montana, was still below average. Data from the Natural Resource Conservation Service showed that precipitation was at 82 percent of the Jefferson River Basin average and the snow water equivalent was at 80 percent of the historic average. As a whole, snowpack and snow water content were below average throughout Montana.

Jefferson Valley Habitat for Humanity Board of Directors named a Partner Family for the house to be constructed this year. The family of Curt and Kim Jackson was chosen.

Whitehall Lady Trojan volleyball players Heather Smith and Mellisa Lofftus were chosen to play in Class A, Class B, and Class C All-Star volleyball games held at Montana State University. The teams were selected from nominations by their coaches and divisional representatives.

Whitehall High School Student of the Week was Lance Briggs. Lance was nominated by Bill Herbolich for his excellent work in Algebra I. Lance, a freshman, is the son of Dean and Wendy Briggs. He had plans to attend college after high school. Lance enjoys basketball and music.

Whitehall High School Students of the Week were the managers of the Lady Trojan volleyball team - Molly Ballard, Jennifer Dolan, and Brian Sears. They put in a tremendous amount of time and effort during the successful season of the Lady Trojans.
