GJP Hosts First Annual Whitehall Short Story Competition

Are you a writer who loves to create non-fiction? Do you love the Whitehall area? Are you a creative mind that needs an outlet? We have just the competition for you!

The 1st Annual GJP Short Story Challenge is a creative writing competition open to writers in the Jefferson Valley area.

There are two rounds of competition. In the 1st Round, beginning on April 1st, participating writers are assigned a subject or a character assignment. One of these assigned items will have something to do with the Whitehall/Jefferson Valley area. A choice of two genre options will be provided, though fiction will not be offered. Writers have 30 days to write an original story no longer than 2,500 words. Participants may sign up at any time in April, but all entries are due by noon on Sunday, April 30, 2023.

The judges choose the top ten short stories to advance to the 2nd Round where writers receive new assignments, only this time they have 15 days to write a short story no longer than 2,000 words. Two winners will be selected and prizes awarded. Two age groups - under 18 and over 18, are available.

Feedback from the judges is provided for every submission, there are prizes for the winners, and the writers retain all the rights to the stories they create.

Each submission carries a $10 registration fee which enters your piece into the competition and your second piece if selected to the second round; feedback from the judges is provided for every submission, there are cash prizes for the winners, and the writers retain all the rights to the stories they create. All pieces will be posted on GJP’s Facebook and website, with a Reader’s Choice, voted upon.
