Sustainability Committee Hears Two Legacy Project Presentations

On Wednesday, March 8th, the Whitehall Sustainability Committee (WSC) heard two legacy grant projects - the Town of Whitehall’s Recreation Complex and Gold Junction Present’s Multi-Use Flexible Stage.

The WSC is a group of Whitehall residents who assist Golden Sunlight Mine in identifying “legacy” projects for the mine to invest in: the projects would leave a lasting effect on the Whitehall area and hit several of the pillars identified by the committee and GSM (cultural, economic development, education, environment, and health).

The Town of Whitehall asked for $500,000 for their Recreation Complex overhaul, currently 50% of their project budget. The project budget however is presumed to be higher than one million once phases of the project have been established.

Gold Junction Presents asked for $75,000 of their Phase I Star Theatre Conversion Project. Phase I consists of the multi-use flexible stage and lighting/sound system and comes in at a projected total of $142,000. The complete Star Theatre Conversion Project is estimated at $2.9 million.

Those in attendance gave their feedback on the proposals and submitted their comments via an online forum, which will then be tabulated and given back to the presenters. Presenters will then have the opportunity to update their proposals with suggestions before sending the final project proposal to Golden Sunlight Mine headquarters in Nevada. A decision on funding should be made by the mine before the end of May.
