Ledger Looking Back 25 Years: 3/18/1998

MARCH 18, 1998

The new 500,000-gallon tank, built in the summer of 1997 as part of the Whitehall water improvement project, has had a series of leakage problems since it was filled. Representatives from the Town of Whitehall, water project engineers (Damschen & Associates), the water tank contractor (Sharbono Construction), and water tank manufacturing (Peabody) met in Whitehall and inspected the tank. An initial, tentative finding was that the foundation for the tank was faulty and would need to be improved. To do the improvement, the tank itself may have to be dismantled and then reconstructed. Town officials were awaiting word from Sharbono or Damschen on a final decision.

The Whitehall Coast to Coast Store was moving to the vacated Dick’s Department Store building, and Coast to Coast owners Dale and Bridget Morse hoped to complete the move by the end of April. The Coast to Coast Store had been located at 1 E. Legion since 1982, and has been owned by Morses for the past eight years.

Whitehall Student of the Week was sophomore, Mandy Davis. Mike Battaiola nominated Mandy because she “does a great job in art class.” Mandy spends a lot of time on her projects and it shows in the quality of her work. Mandy is the daughter of Rex and Barb Davis. She enjoys basketball and riding horses and has plans to attend college.

Whitehall Athletes of the Week were the Lady Trojan volleyball team. The Whitehall Lady Trojans head to the State B Volleyball Tournament as Southern B Division Champs, District 4B Tournament Champs, District 4B Conference Champs, 24-1 1998 season record, and 1997 Class B runner-up. They have earned the respect of everybody they play.
