Two bags containing over $8,000 in alleged drug money confiscated during a drug raid near Whitehall were stolen from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s office sometime between October 23 and October 25. During a raid on a mobile home south of Whitehall on August 6, law enforcement officers confiscated up to 300 marijuana plants, weapons and ammunition, bulletproof vests, and over $8,000 in cash. The money from the raid, along with other evidence, was secured in the county sheriff’s evidence room. The state’s Criminal Investigation Bureau, within the Montana Department of Justice, is investigating the theft and said the only thing missing from the evidence room is the cash. Entry to the room was gained through the ceiling. The state crime lab is analyzing the fingerprints, but investigators say they have “no real suspects” at this time.
A small Whitehall Business Association (WBA) committee led by Sharon Lufftus of the Subway Sandwich Shop, Ann Smith of Office Etc., and Michele LaFountaine of Joan’s A&W had been planning the First Whitehall Christmas Bazaar as part of Whitehall Christmas Stroll activities. The Jefferson County Library Board was scheduled to pick one of two options for the John Gregory Memorial Library in Whitehall - either move into the vacated Dick’s Department Store or expand and remodel the current library building - but instead voted to examine a new, third option. The board decided to examine the potential of building a new library building on Legion Avenue on city property across from Rice Ford.
