Dear Editor,
It has been said that the first leafy spurge plant seen in the Jefferson Valley was planted on a grave in the Fish Creek Cemetery many years ago. Whether or not this is true, the fact remains that this noxious weed has spread its tentacles throughout rangeland and municipalities, along rivers, canals, roadways, and other areas designated as having public interest. This is only one of many noxious weeds that negatively affect productivity in our county.
We are writing in support of the Noxious Weed Control mill levy that will be considered by voters in the June 2022 primary. This mill levy is not an additional levy; it is a continuation of the existing levy that will sunset on June 30, 2022. This would authorize the maintenance of three (3) mills for the Jefferson County Weed District for an additional three years.
An allocation of two (2) mills will support the county-wide herbicide cost-share program. This program allows county residents and landowners to acquire herbicides at a reduced cost. We should all do our part in the “war on weeds,” and this is a great incentive that results in savings for the landowners. It’s vital that those residents who are new to our county are aware of this program.
The allocation of one (1) mill will be used for weed control in municipalities as well as cemeteries, ball fields, and rodeo grounds; education programs, aid residents in obtaining applicator licenses; and research and biocontrol methods.
Please join us in voting FOR authorizing the maintaining of three (3) mills for the Jefferson County Weed District.
