The Golden Sunlight Mine has created the new Community Development Council (CDC), spawned off the Whitehall Community Transition Advisory Committee (CTAC) to assist GSM in funding projects for the Whitehall area.
Chuck Buus, of Golden Sunlight, hopes that this subcommittee will be a real opportunity for Barrick to support projects within the area that better our community and create sustainability.
“This is a committee where we need to think bigger, to start something significant, and really partner with each other and other organizations,” Buus said.
Barrick first created the CDC in their Elko, Nevada operation and the Whitehall committee will be created in its likeness, with tweaks to the program to align with Whitehall and its needs.
“This is not Golden Sunlight Mine’s committee to own - it’s the community’s,” Buus said, noting that committee members will use a ranking system to decide what projects are important, what projects should be funded, etc.
The CDC is currently mimicking Elko’s CDC, which relies on five pillars of community development to qualify a project: cultural heritage, environment, health, economic development, and education. At the next meeting, the Whitehall CDC will adjust these pillars as needed.
The CDC committee will meet Wednesday, October 13th at 1PM at the Borden’s conference room. The agenda is slated to include:
• Review and discuss the Nevada CDC committee leadership structure
• Vote on structure and Chairperson(s) for the project nomination and evaluation
• Review and discuss Nevada CDC approved project (for perspective)
• Review and discuss Nevada CDC rejected project (for perspective)
• Understanding the types and scale of projects (large versus several small projects)
• Posting potential project nomination forms
The CDC committee, at this meeting, will be selecting Chair, Secretary, and any other office deemed necessary for the success of the committee. If you are interested in becoming a part of the CDC, please plan to attend this important meeting.
