Ledger Looking Back 25 Years: September 5, 1996

SEPTEMBER 5, 1996

The Yellowstone Trail, a road which provided the way east and west through Whitehall for decades, is the subject of a new book being written by a Wisconsin couple. Alice and John Ridge, retired professors from Altoona, Wisconsin, are spending September traveling the Yellowstone Trail and gathering information. They contacted the Ledger, hoping to locate people with information on the road’s construction, use and effect on the local community. They are also interested in learning about how automobiles changed people’s lives in or near Whitehall. The Ridges say the Trail is the focal point for their book, but they are really interested in tales about early road travel, families along the way, and related materials.

Whitehall High’s cross country team members may be few in number but they are determined, head coach Diane Dolan said Friday. Dolan, new to the head coaching job this fall, said there is a lot of potential in the thirteen students who have signed on to run so far. She said they have already shown improvement.

“The kids have come and worked hard and I’m very proud of them. They are very supportive of each other,” she said. “That supportiveness will play a key role in this rebuilding year.”

Only four of the runners have experience at high school cross country and none of them are seniors. However, according to Dolan, what they lack in experience, they will make up for in enthusiasm!
