Health is a lifelong journey. For each of us that journey is unique. Every one of us has our own approach to health and wellness. This week, National Women’s Health Week, serves as a reminder for women and girls to take steps toward caring for themselves and making health a priority. It is not easy to take steps toward better health. Women are often caring for people besides themselves. Life is busy. We are making history as we navigate a pandemic. What steps can we take toward better health?
A great first step is to reflect on your personal health goals. How can you become your healthiest you in the stage of life you are in? What can you do to stay physically and mentally healthy during a pandemic? No matter what your personal circumstance, the steps to building a foundation of good health are similar for everyone.
Visit your health care provider. Seek care for underlying health conditions, participate in preventative screenings such as mammograms, well-woman visits, depression screenings or blood pressure screenings. If you have a physical or mental health condition that is interfering with your daily activities, develop a plan to manage your condition. Receive recommended vaccinations.
Get and stay active. Make it a goal to be active for at least 30 minutes a day. Especially if you can include some time outdoors in the sunshine. This will help to maintain a healthy weight and a healthy outlook.
Eat a healthy diet. A heart-healthy diet involves choosing foods such as fruits, vegetable and whole grains, while limiting sugars and saturated fats. Well balanced meals and snacks help to ensure we get enough vitamins, minerals and fiber to keep our bodies strong and healthy across our lifespan.
Be mindful of your mental health. Caring for your mental health includes managing stress, seeking support and practicing healthy behaviors. Getting enough sleep not only helps our mental health, it also helps us say physically healthy and it boosts our immune system. Everyone has different sleep needs however, most people do best with at least 7 hours of sleep. Stay connected to family and friends. Seek help when needed.
Practice safe behaviors. Monitor alcohol intake. Avoid illicit drugs and those not prescribed for you. Take good care of your lungs. Quit smoking and vaping. Continue to protect yourself from COVID-19. Use all your tools. Wear a mask, watch your distance, wash your hands and receive a COVID-19 vaccination.
