Serving Southern Jefferson County in the Great State of Montana

Ledger: Looking Back 25 Years

Greg and DeAndra Parks of Whitehall have been chosen by the Jefferson Valley Habitat for Humanity (JVHFH) as the second family to receive a Habitat for Humanity home. The first home, built for and with Bill and Margaret Carhuff, was completed in December. Although the announcement of their selection is great news for the Parks family, Greg and DeDe know that it means they face some hard work ahead. Every “partner” family chosen to receive a home must contribute at least 500 hours of “sweat equity” for the Humanity program. That did not come as a surprise though, for the couple was already involved in the Habitat for Humanity program. They spent a number of volunteer hours on construction of the Carhuff home, and have voluntarily assisted with other Habitat tasks.

The Forest Service proposes to do some “prescribed burning” in two different areas west and north of Whitehall. About 2,000 acres of grass, shrubs and scrub timber would be burned in Big Foot Pasture, 19 miles north of Whitehall, and another 444 acres would be burned in Tebay Pasture, 16 miles west of Whitehall. Both areas lie in the Jefferson Ranger District of the Beaverhead/Deerlodge National Forests.

The Whitehall school district is getting in line to go “on line.” The board of trustees voted unanimously April 3 to allow the administration to proceed with a plan developed by an advisory committee of local citizens and school staff. The goal of the technology committee, which has been working about a year, was to examine the status of technology use in the schools and prioritize recommendations to improve technology use. . . .

Jeremy Ward had better have a very sweet tooth, because he certainly has the candy to satisfy it after winning a contest to sell the most candy in a Whitehall fund-raiser. Ward sold $364 worth of candy to Whitehall area buyers in a recent drive to raise money for the schools, local baseball teams, the soccer teams and the swimming pool. His prize was a 5 pound bar of chocolate.

The Missoula Children’s Theater, which brought “Rumpelstiltskin” to Whitehall in October 1994 will be in town soon for a return engagement. This time, local children will have a chance to star in “The Tales of Hans Christian Andersen.”
