High School, Junior High Rodeo this weekend

There will be plenty of local athletes in action this weekend at the annual Whitehall High School and Junior High Rodeo.

The rodeo is scheduled to take place Saturday, September 7 and Sunday, September 8 the Whitehall Rodeo Grounds. The event sponsored by the Whitehall Saddle Club and Whitehall High School Rodeo Club will start Saturday at 10 a.m. and at 9 a.m. Sunday. A Cowboy Church Service with Preacher John Spencer of Big Sky Ranch Ministry of Billings will take place Sunday at 7:30 a.m.

According to Lonna Johnson of the Whitehall Saddle Club, area high schoolers who will be competing this year are Jacy Johnson, Kassidy Dunagan, Brynna Wolfe, Evan Wagner and Garris Robertson. In the junior high division, McKenzie Kountz, Hope Nieskens, and Julia Hoagland will be competing.

The rodeo has a total number of 77 high school and 42 junior high participants. Johnson was enthusiastic about the junior high numbers and is seeing an increase after a new statewide program where high schoolers mentor junior high competitors.

Johnson is hopeful they will be able to get through each day's event in around 5 and a half hours.

There is no admission to this year's event and concessions will be available including breakfast on both days of the event. The food and drink will be available at the green concession building near the baseball fields.

Johnson added the Cowboy Church Service will allow competitors and spectators to not miss church on Sunday.

Rich Johnson is the arena director for the 2019 Rodeo.
