Committee to address weeds

A new committee of Whitehall residents and business owners will soon be working together to address weed problems within town limits.

The Whitehall Town Council voted unanimously last week to begin working on a resolution that would create a "adopt an alley" program.

"If we could get the weeds under control it would improve the looks of town considerably," said Mayor Mary Janacaro Hensleigh.

Council member Montina Rawson said the weed issue should not just be up to Public Works to take care of.

Hensleigh told those in attendance at the September 10 meeting that homeowners are responsible for weeds on their property and to the center line of the alley.

She said the adoption program would enhance the appearance, safety, and cleanliness of the town.

In other business, Lee Good of Whitehall Low Power TV approached the governing body to ask permission to lay conduit through town property.

Good said Whitehall Low Power TV has to change their frequencies because the FCC auctioned off all the channels above 36 to cell phone companies. He was able to get two frequencies, but said in order for those to work he would need to lay conduit from the "bridge" on E. 1st Street through the center of road in the cemetery until they reach the north end. This would allow him to reach the "Blue" water tank. Good said from there they would go either right or left through one of the town easements.

The Council voted unanimously to approve the request.
