Serving Southern Jefferson County in the Great State of Montana

Editorial: Search and Rescue deserves a "Yes" vote

Early next month, local resident in Jefferson County will vote on ballot measure that would help pay for operation costs and equipment for Jefferson Valley Search and Rescue and Elkhorn Search and Rescue.

The total amount raised by the levy would be an estimated $29,485 per year, and this is money is integral to operations for the organizations that are vital to the community.

When the Jefferson Valley Search and Rescue is called to duty, members do their absolute best to help those in need. It is time for residents to help them not only with operational costs, but for much needed equipment.

The cost increase on taxes would be an increase of $2.65 on a $200,000 home and $1.33 on a $100,000 home. This is an increase, but not a huge one, and it is for a needed cause.

While it is scary to think that someone will ever need a search and rescue organization to assist them, they are very much needed in the wide-open spaces of Montana. It is essential for them to have the money they need because it is not a matter of if they will be needed -- it is a matter of when. Our local volunteers are well trained and an asset to this community.

Thanks to everyone who volunteers locally for the search and rescue organizations and hopefully a yes vote next month will help you into the future.
