Hall inducts class of 2018

A total of seven individuals and two teams were inducted into the Whitehall High School Hall of Fame at a special ceremony last Saturday.

Dan Reum, Heather (Smith) Ranalli, Dr. Gayle Sacry, Shane Shaw, Frank Sholey, Dr. Keli (Mabbott) Kowk, and Kietra (Mabbott) Broders were inducted into the third class of the hall of fame. The 1979 wrestling team and 1990 boys basketball team were also recognized at the ceremony.

Board President Mike Hedegaard told those in attendance there are now 36 individuals or teams in the hall of fame, adding there is a representative from every decade since the 1930's.

Hedegaard said the hall not only shows the success achieved by Whitehall sports, but all of the inductees have been great people.

DAN REUM

Reum worked for the Whitehall schools from 1969 to 1999 where he served as a teacher, coach, and athletic director. Hedegaard said Reum was one of the hardest working people he's known. During his time on staff, WHS athletics earned two state titles, the only two in program history. Whitehall teams also earned 17 total state team trophies, 17 divisional championships, and 20 district championships.

HEATHER (SMITH) RANALLI

Heather was a seven time lettermen while playing basketball and volleyball. She was the State Volleyball MVP in 1997 when the Lady Trojans finished in second place. She was first team all state three times in volleyball and once in basketball. She went on to play volleyball for the University of Montana Western.

DR. GAYLE SACRY

Dr. Sacry was inducted for his lifelong contribution to Whitehall athletics. A 1954 graduate, Dr. Sacry was a star athlete for the Trojans. He also volunteered numerous hours for the sports programs as a Doctor, as well as working on the construction of sports facilities. His induction speech was given by his son Steve who said his father knew the value of sports in not only his life, but also the life of others.

SHANE SHAW

A 1979 graduate of Whitehall High School, Shaw won the state wrestling title in 1979. His dramatic 13-11 victory over Ben Camphouse of Simms helped lead the Trojans to a third place finish and their first state trophy in wrestling. In his induction speech, Hedegaard said Shaw's victory at state was the most exciting sporting event he has ever witnessed. Shaw was a four-year varsity starter in football, was all conference three times, and a MVP of the team as a senior. He placed fourth in state wrestling as a sophomore and won two divisional titles.

1979 WRESTLING TEAM

Led by Jim Loomis, the 1979 wrestling team won the Southern B Divisional Tournament and finished third at state. Shane Shaw won a state title for the team, while Frank Sholey and Mark Smith finished in second place. For members of the team would finish with a total of six individual titles for the Whitehall squad.

FRANK SHOLEY

Frank placed at the state wrestling tournament in three of his four years with the team including a state championship in 1980. He was a runner up in 1979. He was a state AAU champion as a sophomore and placed third at the Western Regionals. He was also an all-state football player as a defensive back.

1990 BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM

The state runner up Whitehall Trojans had an amazing post season run after finishing the regular season with a .500 record. The Trojans would finish fourth at district and after losing their first game at Divisionals to Lodge Grass, would win five straight games to qualify for state. The Trojans would win their first two games at state against Cut Bank and Thompson Falls before losing to Lodge Grass in the championship game.

DR. KELI (MABBOTT) KWOK

Dr. Kwok had an incredible career for the Trojans. She was a 10-time letterman, and earned all-state honors five times. She was an all-state member of the Lady Trojans volleyball team that finished second at state. Dr. Kwok was also the Class B Defensive player of the year as a senior. She was all state in basketball and finished fourth at the state tennis tournament.

KIETRA (MABBOTT) BRODERS

Broders earned nine letters in three sports during her time at Whitehall High School. She excelled in track where she was a two time state champion in the long jump. She also was a three time state placer in the triple jump. She held the district and divisional long jump and triple jump record for ten years. She also starred in volleyball where she was all state two times and a member of the state runner up team in 1997.
