Serving Southern Jefferson County in the Great State of Montana
The season has come to an end for the Whitehall High School boys basketball team.
Entering the 5B District Tournament as the three seed, the Trojans won two of their first three games before losing an elimination game 48-41 to fourth seeded Manhattan.
Whitehall opened the tournament last Thursday with a hard fought 56-44 win over sixth seeded Broadwater County High School.
Head Coach Zach McLean said while it wasn't their best-played game of the season, his team fought hard and battled through foul trouble.
"Any win is a good win at this time of year," he said.
Up six at the end of three quarters, junior Max Feight took control of the game in the third quarter on his way to a game high 31 points.
"He had a huge game. He's the best player in our league. There are times he gets frustrated with junk defenses, but I thought he was patient in the second half and took good shots," McLean said.
With the win, the Trojans advanced to the semifinals for a matchup against second seeded Big Timber. Much like the first matchup between the two teams, Whitehall had a lead with under a minute left but was unable to seal the win and fell 47-44.
Feight led the team in scoring with 15, Braden Smith had a huge night with 14, and Wyatt Alexander added 10 points.
Following the loss, McLean told his team that they are facing an elimination game and it will come down to how bad they want the victory.
"You can feel sorry for yourselves or you can come out and play," McLean told his team.
The Trojans listened to their longtime head coach and came out firing Saturday morning with a dominating 61-37 win over rival Jefferson High School.
The win set up Whitehall for an opportunity to play Manhattan for a chance to qualify for the divisional tournament in Billings.
Having to play less than five hours from the conclusion of their last game, the Trojans battled hard against the Tigers but were unable to take a lead at any point in the seven-point loss.
Feight led the team with 16 points.
