With a 57-51 win last Friday night over Townsend, the Whitehall High School boys basketball team clinched the third seed in the this week's District 5B Tournament in Belgrade.
The game was tied at half before the Trojans (12-6, 5-5 5B) outscored the Bulldogs 14-8 in the third quarter on their way to the six-point victory.
"This was a big win for us, definitely one we needed," senior Braden Smith said following the game. "Winning this game put us at the third seed which set up the way we want for districts."
Whitehall was led in scoring by junior Max Feight who had a game high 30 points. Senior Ryan Murphy had 13, Smith had eighth and Sawyer Kenner added six points.
The Trojans will once again battle Townsend Thursday. The battle with the sixth seeded Bulldogs is scheduled to tip off at 7:30 p.m.
The winner of the game is scheduled to play seconded seeded Big Timber Friday at 4:30 p.m. The loser will play in an elimination game Saturday morning at 9 a.m.
The top three teams from the 5B Tournament will advance to the Southern B Divisional Tournament in Billings.
In the first matchup against Townsend, Whitehall won 62 to 40 in a January game at Varsity Gym.
In other action last week, the Trojans were upended 69-42 Saturday by host Manhattan Christian. The Eagles, who avenged an earlier loss this season, broke up a one-point game at half with a huge third quarter. Feight led the team with 22 points. Murphy added six and Smith finished with six. points.
