Serving Southern Jefferson County in the Great State of Montana
The Whitehall High School wrestling team put on a great performance against some of the best competition in the state at last week's CMR Holiday Tournament in Great Falls.
The Trojans finished 19th out of 54 teams at the tournament that featured most of the Class AA and A Teams in Montana. Whitehall finished sixth out of all the Class B teams, ahead of the other schools in their Southern B/C Division.
"The boys did great. All the Whitehall wrestlers contributed to this effort," Assistant Coach Steve Sacry said. ""We had exceptional performances by 103 pounder Dawson Powers who placed 6th, 132 pounder Connor Johnson who placed 8th and Dawson Hoerauf at heavyweight who placed 5th."
Sacry said after five rounds of wrestling Friday in the double elimination 64-man bracket, the Trojans had five advance to the top 12 and wrestle in second day matches.
Powers, Dalten Denny, Johnson, Kayden Howser and Hoerauf all advanced to the second at the prestigious tournament.
"Sometimes its hard to understand the magnitude and level of competition at these big tournament. I'm pleased with the focus and effort that the team made, especially those that were able to place," Sacry said.
On Saturday, the rest of the Whitehall team competed at the Currie JV Tournament at Great Falls High School.
Sacry said Gage McMillan, Alleck Holloway, Mike Wilkinson, Dallen Hoover, Brody Becker, Wyatt Powers, Garris Robertson, and Gaten Wassberg represented Whitehall well.
Wrestling is pools of 16, the Trojans had six place. Wyatt Powers finished first, Mike Wilkinson placed fifth, Dallen Hoover was third, Brock Becker was fifth, Garris Robertson was fifth and Gaten Wassberg finished in third place.
This Friday, the team will travel to Anaconda for a dual starting at 6 p.m.
"We both have full teams and it will be a good match. Though it's the start of Christmas, if people have time, it's a close match to see the boys wrestle. They appreciate the community support," Sacry said.
