Serving Southern Jefferson County in the Great State of Montana

Lady Trojans keep fighting

While they were unable to come away with a victory, Whitehall High School girls basketball Coach Kelly Nieskens was proud of the way his team played in a 46-37 home loss Saturday against rival Jefferson High School.

After a 52-17 setback Friday to a talented Three Forks team, Nieskens said the team was able to put the loss behind them.

The Lady Trojans (2-3, 0-2 Southern B), came out of the gates strong Saturday and took a 12-10 lead at the end of the first quarter, and trailed just 21-19 at half.

"We looked like a veteran team there for a little bit," Nieskens said about the team with no seniors.

Nieskens said the team struggled in the middle of the game and their inexperience shows at times. As the season moves forward, Nieskens would like to see a deeper rotation.

Despite the loss, Nieksens lauded his team for coming out with a lot of energy and playing hard.

Jefferson Senior Aubrey McMaster had a game high 30 points, and Nieksens said Whitehall had a tough time defending the Montana Tech bound senior. He added Jefferson is a good team with a lot of seniors.

Sophomore Asha Noyes led the team with 19 points, and junior post Dorothy Mastel was also in double figures with 15. Ashlynn Ellison added two points and Kendra Klapan had one.

"This is a team that keeps coming out and fighting. It's says a lot about them. It is no fun losing, but we did some good things. We're improving and heading in the right direction. The goal is to get better every time."
